1989 Vintage
Wine Spectator,
April 30, 1991. Rated 89. A unique, complex white wine, with
toasty, herbal, buttery aromas, rich fig, lemon and spice flavors
and a lingering aftertaste. The fruit flavors are crisp and long
lasting. A blend of Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon.
The Wine News,
October-November 1995 (Steve Pitcher). The first release of
Caymus Vineyards' proprietary blend called "Conundrum" created quite
a stir when it took the "Sweepstakes White Wine Award" at the 1991
National Wine Competition, part of the San Francisco Fair and one
of the country's most prestigious wine judgings. As a judge at that
Fair, I well remember the sensation the Conundrum caused among the
judges on the last day of the proceedings, when the sweepstakes
awards were decided in a final blind tasting…the anonymous "white
blend" virtually leapt out of the row of glasses containing white
tasting samples. It was simply awesome in comparison to the superstar
Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs and other excellent, double-gold-medal
white wines competing against it. The spicy muscat canelli, fruity
and herbaceous sauvignon blanc, viscous chardonnay and flavor-broadening
sémillon were each delicately identifiable in the blend, resulting
in a uniquely flavored wine that showcased the special attributes
inherent in each grape used, and treating the palate to wonderful
tastes and textures obtained from whole cluster pressing, barrel
fermentation and partial malolactic fermentation.
