1990 Vintage
Wine Spectator,
November 30, 1991. Rated 91. Fruity, spicy and complex, with
tiers of spicy Muscat flavors that blend in nicely with the toasty
pear, mineral, nutmeg, peach and more. Hard to imagine a wine with
more variety of flavor. Rich and smooth, with a long finish. December
31, 1991. Number 88 on the Top 100 list: The second vintage
from this Napa Valley producer, Conundrum proved an exciting blend
of Chardonnay, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. For those looking
for a new twist on whites, this could be a trendsetter.
Food & Wine,
April 1992. Wine of the Month. Looking for something different
in dry white wine? You'll get it in this complex, highly original
blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscat Canelli.
Thick textured and mouth-filling, with a spicy, floral, almost clovelike
perfume, this exotic bottling is wonderful with mild Chinese dishes.
New York Newsday,
November 6, 1991 (David Rosengarten). The 1990 Conundrum is
a rich, dramatic, exciting wine, reminiscent of a dry muscat from
Alsace; in fact, the Wagner family arrived in the United States…from
Alsace….It's also great, as dry muscat is in Alsace, as an aperitif.
San Francisco
Chronicle, February 5, 1992 (Steve Pitcher). Wonderfully
perfumed nose reminiscent of Viognier, an exotic Rhone varietal,
offering complex aromas of lemon citrus, vanilla custard, honeysuckle,
peach and spice. Lots of fruit on the palate, tasting almost sweet
but finishing dry. Excellent acidity. A stylish, well-made wine
that will prove a good match with richly sauced poultry and seafood
dishes.
