1991 Vintage
Wine Spectator,
April 15, 1993. Rated 92. This delicious white wine pumps out
lots of flavor, with pear, spice, vanilla, apple and peach all rolling
together in the same direction. Elegant, impeccably balanced and
long and lingering on the finish, where it turns to honey and sweet
oak. December 31, 1993. Number 57 on the Top 100 list: This
is the third vintage of Caymus' exotic Sauvignon Blanc-based white
wine blend and they just keep getting better. It is defining a category
of its own.
Food & Wine,
February 1994. A highly original blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc, Sémillon and Muscat, Conundrum is thick textured, spicy-floral
and layered with exotic flavors, a perfect partner for mild Asian
dishes.
Wine & Spirits,
August 1993. Only the slightest hint of muscat here; this wine's
character is that of a rich, barrel fermented sauvignon blanc. The
smokey oak is well-matched with the complex fruit. Smooth-bodied,
big but elegant, this blend makes a strong statement yet is still
well suited to the dinner table.
Karen McNeil,
August 14, 1992. First, the conventional note: Lots of zingy
honeysuckle/fig/coconut in the nose and later in flavor. Wine comes
into the mouth splashing crème brulee-like textures everywhere.
There's just a tiny whippet of toastyness that is suffused with
all sorts of citrus: tangerine, lemon, orange. Finish is an eon
in delicious length. But this is the sort of wine that ought not
be reduced to a mere tasting note. It is one of those rare wine
experiences that leaves you with the ineluctable sense that you
are experiencing a great moment when the earth herself surged upward
and gushed forth an archetypally perfect flavor. If you are very
very good, it you pay attention, this wine lets you inside its soul.
San Francisco
Chronicle, November 23, 1992 (Steve Pitcher). An intriguing
blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Muscat results
in a wildly aromatic wine, offering forward scents of vanilla custard,
basil, apricot and new-mown grass. The flavors replicate the nose,
with emphasis on the herbal element and the addition of a touch
of smokiness. An intense, delicious wine barely able to contain
itself.
