2003 Vintage

Whitleyonwine.com (Robert Whitley), February 2005. Rating: 94.  Voluptuous, layered, remarkably complex, full-bodied, rich, spicy and with dazzling persistence of flavor.  If you like all of those things, RUN to your nearest wine merchant and grab a bottle or two of Conundrum before they run out. Conundrum is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Viognier and Muscat.  Don’t even think about it.  Just unscrew the cap (yes, now Conundrum comes in screwcap) and savor the decadence.

Desert Sun (Palm Springs, CA), May 29, 2005:  Conundrum won the hearts and taste buds of the panel and me, garnering six first place votes out of a possible eight!  To create this wine, the maker starts with sixty different lots of five different grape varietals, mixing, matching, tasting, spitting and tasting again.  The result is marvelously distinctive, a subtle, fascinating wine that says, “I’m smooth and so different from chardonnay.”  When the advertising executive on my panel asked, “Is it a chardonnay?” naturally I answered, “No, it’s Conundrum.”

Beverage Dynamics, July/August 2005.  Rating:  Four stars.  A tropical explosion loaded with mango, pineapple and kiwi; an expansive palate with tropical flavors atop citrus tones and a hint of vanilla in a creamy yet lively structure.

Cheers, July/August 2005. Rated 90, four stars:  A tropical explosion loaded with mango, pineapple and kiwi; an expansive palate with tropical flavors atop citrus tones and a hint of vanilla in a creamy, yet lively structure. (Cheers National Wine Panel selection).

Philadelphia Enquirer, June 19, 2005: This exotic white…is a sophisticated drink.  Just a touch off-dry, with notes of spice and honeyed melon, Conundrum is a luscious and food friendly sauvignon-blanc-based blend that changes slightly every year.  Lately, it’s appearing more in restaurants as a wine-by-the-glass.

Saturday Star (Toronto, Ontario), June 25, 2005: King of the hill as usual is 2003 Conundrum, with smoky pineapple, apple, peach, guava, passionfruit and mango notes, the result of an exotic blend of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, semillon, viognier and muscat canelli.

Sun (San Bernardino, CA), June 1, 2005. This wine is one of my favorites during the hot weather. The nose shows peaches and honeysuckle, with a hint of citrus.  In the mouth you get melon and pear with a touch of creamy vanilla.  The finish is bright and refreshing with rich fleshy fruit tones at the end.
